According to the reports of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), cyclone “Biparjoy” is likely to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm and move northwards to cross Saurashtra, Pakistan, Goa, and Kutch coasts on 15 June. The fishermen residing in these coastal areas have also been issued a warning by IMD.
‘Biparjoy’ means ‘disaster’ or ‘calamity’ in Bengali. The name ‘Biparjoy’ of this cyclone was suggested by Bangladesh on a rotational basis, following certain guidelines. This ‘Biparjoy’ cyclone emerged in the Arabian Sea. This cyclone is predicted to attain severity in the next few days. IMD has predicted its movement northwards near Pakistan, Saurashtra, Kutch, Maharashtra, and Goa in the coming days.
Cyclone Biparjoy at the Arabian Sea
The arrival of cyclone ‘Biparjoy’ has led to high ocean waves at Tithal Beach in Valsad on the Arabian Sea coast. Tithal Beach has been closed to tourists until June 14 to prevent the occurrence of any harm caused by the cyclone.
Alert in Maharashtra
As per the reports, a warning has been issued for fishermen in coastal areas of Maharashtra including Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts not to venture into the sea. The weather is going to be harsh due to strong winds with high speeds of 135-145 kmph in these areas.
Harsh weather and sea conditions due to the storm can take the wind speed to 135-145 kmph gusting to 160 kmph in the next three-four days. The weather office has issued a warning for fishermen not to venture into the sea.
Heavy Rains in Pakistan
The cyclone has impacted the Pakistan monsoon. Heavy rains in the northwest of Pakistan caused 25 death and injuries to 145 people, said authorities.
Consequently, the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has issued a ‘red alert’ as Cyclone was estimated to be roughly 900 kilometers due south of the metropolis on Saturday, based on Pakistan-based ARY News. Moreover, as per the ARY News report, The Karachi Post Trust said that the shipping activities will remain suspended till 14 June.
